How we evaluate products
Responsible Investment strategies, processes, practices and disclosures are assessed against the eight criteria for product certification in the Responsible Investment Standard and accompanying Guidance and Assessment Notes.
What are the requirements?
In order to certify products as certified responsible investments, RIAA assesses them against its RI Certification Standard. The Certification Standard is underpinned by eight requirements that act as the guiding principles of the RI Certification Program. Since its inception the RI Certification Standard has evolved significantly, reflecting the dynamic evolution of responsible investment. These eight requirements are:
- RI strategies are formal, disclosed, consistent, auditable and fit for purpose
- Labels are clear, honest and not misleading
- Product avoids significant harm
- Discloses full holdings, performance, sustainability outcomes and engagement and voting practices
- Managed by active stewards, and managers can detail the stewardship practices and outcomes
- Organisation has formal commitment to responsible investment
- Organisation provides educational information to members and customers about RI strategies

Overview
The option aims to invest in a diverse mix of assets with the majority in the growth assets such as shares, and a modest investment in defensive assets such as cash and fixed interest. The option’s exposure to these asset classes will be obtained primarily by holding assets directly, including Exchange Traded Funds. This option targets investments that are ethically screened and have zero exposure to fossil fuels.
Description
Future Super is designed to provide members with a way of building their retirement savings in a way that also seeks to reduce climate change and inequality. Future Super’s values are taken into account in the selection, retention, or realisation of all investments, as well as in our investor stewardship activities. As a result, we do not invest in any fossil fuel companies, or in any companies providing significant services and financing to the fossil fuel industry. We are the only super fund to not invest in the big four banks, who are the major financiers of fossil fuel projects in Australia. We also screen out investments in detention centres, live animal export, armaments, and more. Instead, we seek out investments in companies making a positive social and environmental impact, such as renewable energy and healthcare. Our ethical investment mandate is maintained and monitored by our in-house ethical investment team, who also perform the ethical screening work for the fund. Our investment management is also performed in-house, which means we have oversight over every investment made on behalf of our members. Our team applies a negative and positive screen to Australian and global listed equities and fixed interest. Our ethical investment team also works with other fund managers, like Betashares and Infradebt, to create and provide seed investment for new products that meet Future Super's strict ethical mandate. We believe this is an important step in delivering our impact because it provides pathways for all investors, including other super funds, to invest in true-to-label ethical products.
Future Super believes in transparency. For more information see the Additional Information Booklet available at https://www.futuresuper.com/aibOur whole portfolio can be easily found on our website at www.myfuturesuper.com.au
We, the Responsible Investment Association Australasia, don't earn any commission from providers or products you switch to.
