Financial adviser and advisory group certification

Answers to your questions about our certification of financial advisers and advisory groups.

Where can I go to read about the minimum requirements for RIAA Adviser/Group certification?

The Responsible Investment Standard and accompanying Guidance and Assessment Notes can be found here (link to Standard and Guidance Notes page)

All new entrants to the Program applying for Financial Adviser Certification are now required to complete an approved training course to be eligible to apply for certification (link to SIA).

Being certified as an adviser or having a product or fund certified under the Responsible Investment Certification Program demonstrates a commitment to growing and developing responsible investment across Australia and/or Aotearoa New Zealand and staying in step with developments in performance of the responsible.

Does RIAA provide support for completing a certification application?

The RIAA team provides answers to clarifying questions in the application process and outlines documents that may be necessary for your certification.

On a case-by-case basis, a Responsible Investment Analyst may be assigned to conduct a preliminary review of the product during the application for certification.

To discuss the application, contact our Membership and Engagement Officer at info@responsibleinvestment.org.

How does RIAA promote my certification and advice services to the market?

RIAA is committed to promoting your certification on our website membership page where consumers can find a certified adviser.

Where can I find the directory of certified financial advisers?

You can access the full list of certified financial advisers here.

I want to pitch Financial Advisory Group certification to my leadership team. What are some resources I can share with them?

Thank you for your interest in the RIAA Certification Program. You will find most of what you need on this website. To get a better sense of what is required for Certification and the benefits of certification, please read our Product Certification Overview and Financial Adviser Certification Overview. You can also find the Responsible Investment Standard here. If you would like more tailored support, please reach out to our Membership and Engagement Team at info@responsibleinvestment.org.

The Financial Adviser section of your Certification Overview references ‘approved training courses’. Would RIAA consider the qualifications of ‘key and responsible investment personnel’ in managed funds as well as, or instead of, ‘experience’?

The “two years of relevant experience” requirement was removed from the Responsible Investment Standard in July 2024 with all new entrants to the Program now required to complete an approved training course to be eligible to apply for certification. For investment management services and financial adviser groups, we have provided exemptions on approved training courses for equivalent internal training they may undertake that provides similar education.  We would consider the Responsible Investment aspects of any training undertaken to determine equivalency.
